Sinergijom do rezultata

Privredni izveštaj / Economic Report - ROKO TOLIĆ
Direktor aerodroma Dubrovnik / Director of Dubrovnik Airport

Svaki posao nosi svoju odgovornost, težinu i izazove, a razlika između korporativnog upravljanja i rukovođenja u lokalnoj samoupravi doista jest poprilična. Danas predstavljam i vodim najznačajniji gospodarski subjekt hrvatskog juga i zajedno sa svojim timom imam ambiciju pokrenuti novi, dosad najveći projekat razvoja prometne infrastrukture u našem kraju.

Synergy Leads to Results

Ćilipi Airport is also called Dubrovnik's reception, because the largest number of tourists who come to this coastal paradise arrive by plane. It has signed contracts with more than 65 airlines and its major strategic partner is Croatia Airlines. However, the people who run the airport are not lulled by good results. Director Roko Tolić says that success is not the result just of the attractiveness of the destination, but also of the team work of the employees. The most important is loyalty to a common mission, because - he says - the airport has never been the result of only one man. The main business goal is that Ćilipi might remain an efficient, safe and comfortable airport for all its users. The management is pleased to point out the good relations with colleagues in the region and its desire to cooperate with the Serbian carrier, Air Serbia, in a more extensive and efficient way.

Is it harder to run the city, as assistant mayor of Dubrovnik, or to run an institution, such as the airport?

Each job carries its responsibilities, difficulties and challenges, and the difference between corporate governance and management in a local government is really considerable. Airport work is very dynamic, due the speed that is necessary to make a decision and implement it. Aviation is a globalized business, always susceptible to the ever-growing global standards of the industry. At the same time, the management of a city, which has the status of cultural heritage of mankind and is called the pearl of the Adriatic, is truly a very specific work. I love to remember that period of my life, although I still have the opportunity to work closely with the Mayor, mainly on activities related to destination management. By that time, I was at the beginning of my business career, and having the chance to act on behalf of Dubrovnik is something that inevitably put me on the social scene at both, local and national level. Today I represent and run the most important economical subject of the South of Croatia and, together with my team, I have the ambition of starting the largest project up today for the development of infrastructure in our region. So far, we are on track to succeeding.

As director of a large public company, which of your results do you find commendable?

Dubrovnik Airport is the image of an efficient destination airport and our greatest achievement is to function as a reliable logistics support for the most important economic branch of Dubrovnik, which is tourism. Almost 70% of tourist arrivals to our Riviera take place by air and it is not unreasonable to consider our airport as Dubrovnik's reception. We operate under conditions of extreme seasonality, which means that during one weekend in July or August, we may have the traffic of January, February or any other non-seasonal month. That requires a good deal of skill in planning infrastructure and manpower. That is why; we have obtained numerous recognitions from solid international carriers, as well as the special recognition of the Council of Airports of Europe (ACI Europe) for the second best airport in the category of up to 5 million passengers. These facts clearly show that we have what to boast of. Of course, we should also mention that, at the middle of its lifespan, Dubrovnik airport was literally raised from its ashes and that thanks to the efforts of its employees, it achieved the standards and reputation it enjoys today.

Which are the airlines and destinations that connect Dubrovnik with the rest of the world?

Last year Dubrovnik Airport signed contracts with as many as 65 airlines and that produces the impression that we are a large nodal airport or hub, but at the background is just the fact that people from many parts of the world wish to come and see Dubrovnik. Our main strategic partner is Croatia Airlines and we expect much more from this collaboration in the future, especially after the optimistic results obtained by restructuring the carrier. Croatia Airlines is extraordinarily important for us, because it keeps our connectivity during the entire year... When we talk about the tourist season, I can hardly recall a renamed company that does not fly to Dubrovnik, regardless that they do it as traditional, so-called "legacy carriers", low cost carriers, or charter carriers.
